SoundFX
[0m -- This fun software from Vincent Lee adds sound effects to your
Amiga's basic operations, like mouse-clicks and key presses. To run
this program, just double-click on the SoundFX icon on this disk. To
exit SoundFX, adjust the sound volume, or temporarily disable SoundFX,
press the CONTROL and ESCAPE keys simultaneously. This will bring up
the SoundFX control panel with its volume control slider, toggle switch
and quit button.
The example SoundFX configuration on this disk is meant to show off
SoundFX and the sounds on disk. Try pressing CONTROL-FUNCTION keys, TAB,
SPACE, DELETE, RETURN, etc. to check it out. If you don't press any
keys or mouse buttons or remove or insert any disks for 60 seconds, you
will be testing SoundFX' Screen Blank mode, so don't worry if it sounds
like a cricket has crawled into your monitor. This example loads far
too many samples (about 300k worth!) for even 1mb RAM Amigas to operate
comfortably. To use SoundFX regularly, you should select only a few
events and samples to use. Note that SoundFX loads ALL the samples into
fast RAM when it is run, then copies the relevant sample into chip RAM
just when it is played. This means that having lots of long samples
assigned will hog your RAM, and cause your chip RAM to fluctuate. While
this software is stable and fun, be aware of the burden you are putting
on your system if you keep it running during memory intensive
operations.
IF YOU HAVE ONLY 512K RAM
the sample configuration
on disk will surely cause problems, and some of the samples may not be
able to play. In this case, you should quit SoundFX before your Amiga
crashes, and change the startup-file so that fewer samples are loaded.
Do this by changing some of the sample name entries in the parameter
file to "NULL".
SoundFX reads the file called soundfx_startup, to determine which
sounds to assign to which events, and where these IFF sound files are.
SoundFX comes configured to access the startup "parameter file" and
sounds from whichever drawer it is in (currently this disk). To tell
SoundFX to look for a different parameter file, click on its icon,
select INFO from the Workbench menu, and enter the name and path for the
parameter file after the keyword "CONFIGFILE=" (i.e. CONFIGFILE=
DH1:soundfun/soundfx_barnyard). If SoundFX can't find this file, or none
is supplied, it looks first for soundfx_startup in the current
directory, then in the S: directory. The parameter file must have the
complete path for each sound you want to use, if that sound is not in
the same directory as SoundFX. If SoundFX is silent, but you can get
the control panel to come up (hold down control-escape), you should
check that your Amiga's audio connections are hooked up to your monitor
or stereo.
